New school clothes — check.

School supplies purchased — check.

Class schedule picked up — check.

Fresh haircut — check.

While mom or dad may have provided the new clothes and school supplies, Copperhead Cutz provided the fresh haircuts — free of charge — to students at Central Middle School during check-in this week.

Charmin Nettles set up his mobile barbershop near the back entrance of the school for all three days of check-in. He said it was a natural thing for him to do because of his ties to the area. He graduated from Central Middle School in 2005 and then from Lawton High School.

“I like to go back to my old stomping grounds. This is me when I was young,” he said as he took the clippers to one young student’s hair.

Nettles said he was just trying to help families make ends meet.

“Electric bills, gas prices, groceries are killing everybody,” he said. “It’s the least I can do.”

Tierra Williams, whose son Dezmond was getting his hair cut, said she was thankful for the free service.

“I asked him how much and he said it was free,” Williams said. “My son needed that mane cut. Finances are very tight right now. I was going to do it myself, but I’m not the best at that.”

Nettles said he and fellow barber Alexus Ridge cut about 10 heads of hair on the first day of check-in, and he was working on his second student by mid-morning Tuesday.
