The Lawton District Swim Team ripped through the water on Jan. 23 at the Southwest Area Championships in Altus, totaling eight medals as they prepared for the upcoming OSSAA Regional Swim Meet on Feb. 7 at the Edmond Schools Aquatic Center in Edmond, Okla.
A total of 14 student-athletes from Lawton Public Schools, hailing from each of the three high schools competed at the annual meet in seven different events. Of those competitors, eight medals were collected from the LPS squads, including four gold, two silver, and two bronze.
MacArthur High School senior Rohan Mariano led the way with gold medals in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter freestyle. He also earned bronze along with teammates, sophomore Jaylin Esley, senior Juan-Jose Martinez, and junior Evan Raynor, in the 200-meter freestyle relay. MacArthur also had junior Mikaya Norton earn gold in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke.
Eisenhower High School athletes collected three separate medals during the meet. Senior Charles Hinton earned silver in the 200-meter freestyle, while junior Kaitlyn Holder finished second in the 100-meter backstroke and bronze in the 100-meter butterfly.
Each of the medalists and the rest of the squads will compete next at the OSSAA Regional with action starting for MacArthur and Eisenhower at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7 and Lawton High at 5 p.m. that evening.
