Lupi Construction has begun work on a 2,640-square-foot pig barn at the Lawton Public Schools farm on West Lee.

The new facility should be ready when school starts in August, according to LPS Workforce Development Director Adam McPhail.

“It will be open in time for students to get their hogs ready for Spring,” McPhail said.

McPhail said the facility will have pens for about 20 hogs, with room for expansion. Pens will be on both sides of the facility, which will have wash bays and room to store tack.

McPhail said he hopes the new facility will lead to growth in the FFA program.

“We want to have something for the kids to be proud of,” he said.

The present barn will be remodeled and updated and will be used to hold new pigs until students are sure they are healthy enough to be placed with other pigs in the new barn, McPhail said.

A grant from the Lawton Public School Foundation is funding a portion of the barn and Lupi Construction is donating the labor.
