AUGUST 2008

Principal's Feedback

The first day of school is over and our students did a wonderful job of learning our school and classroom procedures. In the next couple of weeks we will continue to work on our procedures.

Our "Open House" went well on Thursday evening. It was great seeing the parents and kids come out in support of our school. In the coming weeks we will schedule "Grade Level Meetings" to provide you with more information on your child's education at Wilson. Please be looking in your child's backpacks for the announcements.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year at Wilson in 2008 - 2009. I believe our staff is the best in the district and we have your children's best interest at heart. Our superintendent, Mr. Beauchamp says, "If you make decisions that are in the best interest of kids, then you can't go wrong."

Student Assessments

Our students will be working hard in the computer lab starting on Monday. We will give every student a STAR Reading and STAR Math test. These test provide us with valuable information on your child's reading and math levels.

We will also begin our Success Maker program assessments. All students will take a computer based test that will provide us a starting point for your child on the Success Maker program. Success Maker is a vital part of our school that provides individualized instruction for every child.

Mrs. Hammond's is working hard to ready the computer lab for these assessments. Every child has to be entered into the data base and then enrolled into their new classes for the school year.

Dismissal Procedures

Our students are released at 3:45 each day. If you are picking up a child please wait outside for your child to come out of the building. We release our students through a number of doors that make it quicker for our kids and staff. Here are our dismissal points for our students:

Kindergarten - South Doors

1st & 2nd Grades - East Doors

3rd & 4th Grades - West Door (Meet them behind the gym)

3rd/4th Split Class - North Doors (Cafeteria Area)

5th Grade - North Doors (Cafeteria Area)

Please wait for your child at these locations!

Attendance & Tardies

The first bell is at 9:00 and our tardy bell is at 9:15 AM. Please make sure your child is at school by 9:00, or no later than 9:15. After 9:15 you will have to sign your child in at the office. Coming to school after 9:15 is TARDY and will be recorded as such.

If you take your child out of school early at the end of the day, your child will be marked either as a half day of absence, or they will be recorded as a tardy. A tardy is missing a part of a school day. It does not matter if the missing part of the day is in the morning, or the afternoon.

Please make sure your child is in school on time and remains at school the entire day.

Parent/Teachers Association

During "Open House" you had the opportunity to become a member of Wilson's PTA. We hope that you took that opportunity and will become a vital member of our PTA.

Last year most of our meetings consisted of the PTA executive and our Wilson teachers. To have a great PTA we need your voice. Please become our educational partner and become an active member of our PTA. Meetings will be announced and flyers sent home on a monthly basis. We will hold our meetings on the same day of the month and the meetings are at 6:00 PM in our auditorium.

Booster Club News

Our Booster Club is working hard to make sure our kids get to play sports and get to represent Wilson School. Football and soccer sign-ups are on going for the upcoming seasons.

During "Open House" you had a chance to be a member of our Wilson Booster Club. I hope that those who signed up make the time in their busy schedules to attend our monthly meetings. The meetings will be announced and flyers sent home on a monthly basis. The meetings will be held on the day of each month and all meetings are at 6:00 PM on our auditorium.

Look for flyers advertising a "Fun Day" at Wilson school, sponsored by your Booster Club. We appreciate all of you who come out to support the kids and our Booster Club.

Student Lunches

Our Accu Scan Operator will notify you once your child's lunch account is low. At this time please send money to school to add to your account. Students will be allowed to CHARGE 3 lunches. If the lunch account is not brought up to date your child will be given a sandwich and a milk for lunch until their accounts are paid in full.

Dress Code

Please make sure your child follows the LPS Dress Code. We will be looking for all violations and if necessary we will involve the parent to correct the child's violations. We will pay special attention to "SAGGING" and "LONG SHIRTS." Mrs. Harris, our counselor will be working on a "Fashion Show" to demonstrate the correct dress code on Friday, August, 22. The fashion show will be during our Wilson Wake-up. Parents are encouraged to attend the show.

Wilson Wildcats

Each month teachers will select a student who they believe represents Wilson and our Great Expectations way of life. The names of our Monthly Wildcats will be announced during our Wildcat Assembly. We will celebrate those students during or monthly assembly and publish their names in the Wilson Newsletter that is sent home every other Friday.

Congratulations to our Wilson Wildcats!

Parent Volunteers

We are always needing volunteers at Wilson to help do a multitude of tasks that will benefit our students. If you are wanting to volunteer just come by the office and talk to Mr. Smith. We can put you to good use doing such things as changing the marquee of events, filling our Food For Kids Backpacks for our Blue Baggers, or just helping copy things for our teachers. We are here for you and we need your help in providing a good education for our students.

Wilson Blue Baggers

Food 4 Kids is a program that provides nourishment for identified students over the weekend. Our "Blue Baggers" are kids that we have identified may be in need of snacks and other health related food items over the weekend. We base our selections on observations while the child is at school. There are a multitude of signs we look at to determine the eligibility of our "Blue Baggers."

The most important aspect of the Food 4 Kids Program is that it is "FREE" to all those students identified. Also, if we are made aware of younger siblings in the home, we do our best to send additional food home for those children as well. The "Wilson Blue Baggers" is a program that is provided to our students, however, if a parent does not want their child involved in the program, they can deny the program. It is an excellent program and provides needed nourishment of our students. Research has proven a well nourished child does better in the classroom.

Wilson's Honor Rolls

Your child can earn a place on two honor rolls at Wilson. The Principal's Honor Roll is for students who achieve all "A's" for the grading period. The Teacher's Honor Roll is for students who achieve "A's & B's" during the grading period. To receive an Honor Roll Certificate at the end of the year the student must meet the criteria for each Honor Roll for the entire year.

For a student to be listed on this page the parent must have signed an LPS Internet Release Form for the 2008 - 2009 school year, and parental permission has to be given.
