What Pre-AP courses does Tomlinson Middle School offer?
7th grade: Pre-AP Reading, Pre-AP English
8th grade: Pre-AP Reading, Pre-AP English
What about math and science?
Tomlinson offers 7th Grade Honors Math and 8th Grade Algebra I. Students are placed in these courses with teacher recommendation. We also have 8th Grade Honors Science that is open enrollment. The FAQ's that follow also pertain to Honors Science.
Why should a student enroll in Pre-AP?
The purpose of the Pre-AP courses is to prepare students for AP classes and AP exams, utilizing them to develop skills for college.
At Tomlinson, we believe that all students can perform at rigorous academic levels. We also believe that we can prepare every student for higher intellectual engagement by providing the opportunity to help students acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed to engage in a higher level of thinking.
Who can be in a Pre-AP class?
Any student with the guidance of parent, teacher, and counselor can enter a Pre-AP course.
Are there any pre-requisites for the Pre-AP classes?
Pre-AP courses are open enrollment. A contract must be signed by the student and parent. This contract ensures that both the student and parent are aware of the added rigor of the course.
What does open enrollment mean?
Open enrollment refers to courses open to any student who wishes to take on the additional challenge of this rigorous curriculum.
What characteristics does a Pre-AP student have?
A Pre-AP student has
- An independent work ethic
- Parental support and guidance
- Well-developed study habits
- A love of reading
- Possession of high level thinking skills
- More complex and mature composition skills
- Satisfactory skill levels on standardized tests.
What types of assignments can a Pre-AP student expect?
Pre-AP students should be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing. Many of the reading assignments will need to be completed out of class. Each quarter students will do a novel in reading and English. Teachers will coordinate plans as to not be reading novels at the same time. Students must also complete a book report from a book off of our Pre-AP reading list.
Will a student have time for after school activities if enrolled in a Pre-AP course?
Students must be able to balance homework and extracurricular activities. Students who enroll should be prepared for the extra rigor of the course.
Is there a limit to the number of Pre-AP courses a student may take?
A student may take as many Pre-AP courses that fit into his/her schedule. Careful consideration should be given to the instructional needs of the individual student.
What qualifications will a teacher need to teach Pre-AP classes?
Teachers have been trained in subject specific Pre-AP workshops by the College Board to provide strategies and tools to engage their students in high-level learning.
What if a student is struggling with his/her Pre-AP course?
Students may always stay 8th hour or come before school to get extra help. If a student decides to exit the Pre-AP program, a written request must be made to the teacher. Once the request has been submitted, a conference will be held with the teacher, counselor, and parent.
