FUNDRAISER

COMING TO A CLOSE THURSDAY

We need your help! The fundraiser does NOT appear to going as well as hoped. Please get out and make those final sales so orders may be turned on Thursday!!! This helps pay for many of the fun things that are educational oriented such as field trips and special programs brought into the school for all children to enjoy. Please note on the form that came home, there is a web site address you can send you "out of town" friends and family to, they in turn email or call you with what they wish to order and you add it to your order. We have included a printer friendly copy of the form with the web site of: http://www.gifts-heart.com/

Fall Fundraiser

BOOK FAIR

Yes, it is time for the Fall Book Fair. We have a great selection again this year. This is a great time to buy some early gifts for special occasions or just to have a good book in the home everyone wants to read. Come check out the selection. The open parent night is from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 30th. We thought we had a link you could preview the books on, but we were sent the wrong link. So, come on up to school and check out all the great books, posters, and goodies!

TRAFFIC
and the
WALKING SCHOOL BUS

We are moving forward with the Safe Routes to Schools program. We now have a crosswalk in the front of the building for EVERYONE to use when walking across the parking lot. (Adults, please set the proper example, use the crosswalk) We will have another (making two total) at the southeast corner and we are working on a major change at the southwest corner. Remember, this is all for student safety as we encourage and expect students to start walking more. The city of Lawton has been out and agrees with the needs and we are working together to make improvements. The Oklahoma State Department of Health (through which the Safe Routes to School is based) has been out monitoring traffic and student flow. We have identified a couple of major walking routes and plan to start the Walking School Bus very soon. A group of volunteers are meeting Tuesday after school to discuss what is next in the process, where the walking routes are, parent permission for students to walk with the Walking School Bus, etc. We had hoped to start this part on the International Walk Day, but we not have the official Walking School Bus ready by then. We do encourage everyone to walk or ride bicycles to school as explained below.

Parking Lot Traffic

We still have too many students riding in cars to and from school instead of walking. The Walking School Bus will help with this. Due to the large number of cars in the afternoons we continue to use two lanes for cars to pick up students. This is NOT the safest method, but is currently necessary to move as many cars out of the street for traffic flow as possible. Students should watch for their ride and be ready to go, using the crosswalk to cross if needed. Drivers should stay with their cars and when students are watching for their ride they can easily and safely get to the car with all the teachers we have out front.

This works well, once the mass of students are out of the building we have had the parking lot clear within ten minutes when this plan is followed.

Mornings, the plan is working well, with very few exceptions. A few drivers continue to use the bus/day care lane when dropping off between 8:45 and 9:15. This has caused a bus or day care back up even as far out as Alan A Dale.

Simple suggestions and common sense makes this work safely. Simple things like, DO NOT STOP OR PARK IN/ON THE CROSSWALKS.

DRIVERS - PLEASE STAY OFF YOUR CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING THROUGH THE PARKING LOT AND IN THE STREETS NEAR THE SCHOOL, WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WHEN ADULTS ARE SETTING THE BAD EXAMPLE OF TALKING WHILE DRIVING.

Overall, THANK YOU! Adults overall are doing a wonderful job getting children to school on time and picked up on time. This helps teach responsibility to our young ones. They after all are the focus for all of us. We want them to succeed in school and life, and we want them be safe while succeeding. Most adults are supportive of the changes (and yes, more are coming, like moving the bike rack again once we have more crosswalks painted and sidewalks) and demonstrate by appropriate example the suggestions of the plan.

Thank you.

International Walk Day
October 8, 2008

Millions of schoolchildren from 42 countries will celebrate the walk to school this October in recognition of International Walk to School (IWALK) Month. Many countries have participated in International Walk to School Day since 2000.

Walking to school promotes safety, health, concern for the environment, a sense of community and physical activity among children. Communities are encouraged to pick a day, a week, once a week or the entire month to celebrate the event and draw attention to these issues.

The month-long event will allow communities flexibility in organizing their Walk to School events. Actively promoting Walk to School throughout the month could also transition smoothly into the launch of a year-round walking program.

International Walk to School Day began in 2000, following several successful walk to school campaigns held in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States in the late 1990s. IWALK is a global partnership that works to support and promote walk to school initiatives around the world.

Hugh Bish is participating this year by encouraging EVERYONE who can, to walk to school and home again that afternoon. We are also planning a walk through the neighborhood that afternoon before school is dismissed. We would like to see all students walking, if you cannot walk, okay, ride a bicycle. This is a great way to walk in groups, safely, and to discover the enjoyment of walking to and from school in a safe group. Parents, walk with a group of kids from your block! Set the example! This then can help us lead into the Walking School Bus program and who knows, parents who walk on October 8th may decide to join us on a regular basis.
