Safety ....our #1 Goal

The staff of Whittier Elementary has made detailed plans to keep your students safe in the event of an emergency. We have contingency plans that we will follow in the event of a fire, severe weather, or other crisis, such as an intruder or other threat. The specific procedures for each type of emergency are detailed below.

Fire Drill ProcedureThe signal for a fire drill will be the fire alarm bell or “Code Red” on the intercom. With the teacher leading, the students will exit in one line and proceed to the designated place by the North fence. A student should be designated to close the classroom door.
Teachers will check roll upon reaching the meeting area.
Students in EXPRESSIONS classes will be accompanied to the meeting area by the EXPRESSIONS teachers and will be joined by their homeroom teacher on the playground.
There will be no running. Our goal is the safe evacuation of the building without panic.
Students will return to the building at the signal of the bell.

Severe Weather Procedures The signal for emergency weather procedures will be one long continuous bell or “Code Black” on the intercom.
At the signal, primary students will assemble in the center of the lower level.
Students on the north end of the second level will come down the north stairs and congregate at the north end of the first level.
Students on the south end of the second level will come down the south stairs and congregate at the south end of the first level.
Students in the portables will enter the main building from the back door and the north door and find their positions accordingly.
All students will be seated on the floor, facing internal walls and at a given command will assume protective postures until the all-clear signal is given.

Crisis Procedures Level 1: Students will be kept in classroom. Students will not be allowed in the hallway, bathroom, office, etc. If students are in PE or music, their teacher will go to the students. The PE and music teachers will go to front to monitor and the custodian to office.

Level 2: Means lock down.
During a Lock-Down, the teachers will close the hall doors and turn off the lights.
They will move children to the floor and against a wall (out of sight from windows).

Red Card The red card hanging by the door can be sent to the office anytime that a teacher or another person in the classroom needs immediate help.

Evacuation Drill Follow same procedure as fire drill. Further instructions will be given if it becomes necessary to evacuate to an alternate site.

School Safety The safety of our students is a priority.
If you have an emergency and need to pick up your child before 3:30 PM you must come to the school office. Teachers will not be allowed to release students to anyone at their doors.
In the morning or after school, please do not stand in the hallways waiting for your child to be released. Wait for your child either by the outside doors, your car, or a designated meeting place. We have instructed the children to always use the designated crossing areas when crossing the street. Please help us keep your children safe by encouraging them to use the crosswalks at all times.

We appreciate those of you who volunteer in the classrooms. We want you to be here. Please sign in and get a name badge at the office before you go to the classroom.

Please inform the teacher if there is a change in your childs’ routine before or after school.

During a severe weather emergency, the safest place for your child is at school, not traveling in a car. Unless it is absolutely necessary, we prefer that parents stay home and take safety precautions themselves, rather than get out in severe weather and come to the school to take their students home. If you feel you must take your child home, we ask that you sign them out at the office, so we are aware that they are with you.
