LPS hosts Region 17 Spelling Bee

Lawton Public Schools hosted its annual Region 17 Spelling Bee at Central Middle School Jan. 31.

42 students from 17 elementary schools — with students from 4th and 5th grade — and four middle schools were represented at this year’s competition. Each participant received a medallion with winner and 1st runner up receiving a trophy as well. The Junior League of Lawton sponsors the event and provides the medallions and trophies.

The winner Priscilla Beavers representing Almor West Elementary will move onto the next level of competition. Beavers will participate in the 2017 Central Oklahoma Spelling Bee on March 4, 2017 at the Reynolds Performing Arts Center at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Priscilla won the bee by correctly spelling the word “Geisha”.

If Priscilla cannot attend the Central Oklahoma Spelling Bee, Region 17 First Runner-Up Nithin Reddy representing Eisenhower Middle School will have the opportunity to represent Lawton Public Schools. Nithin earned runner-up by correctly spelling the word “Hydraulic”.
