Hugh Bish students, parents and staff wish a warm welcome to our new military families in the Lawton-Fort Sill community. A special welcome to our Fort Bliss families coming to Fort Sill. Hush Bish is a military friendly school with almost one-half of the school having military connections, the most of any school off post.

Military Child Education Coalition

We are very proud of all our families. We have special involvement with our military families and their unique needs. We have three staff members who are nationally trained with the MCEC and committee of staff members who are here to help military families with educational needs while attending Hugh Bish Elementary School and living in the Lawton - Fort Sill Community. All our families make up our community and we are here for all our Hugh Bish families.

Ms. Well, school counselor
is the primary contact.

Mrs. Crawford and Mr. McDowell work with Ms. Wells in this important effort.

Learn more about the Military Child Education Coalition if you are a military family in our community.

Thank you students, parents, staff and Relay Team friends for your support in the Hugh Bish coin drive for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. You raised over $1500 in the coin drive. The final amount raised by the Hugh Bish Relay Team was $3800. That makes the team a SILVER TEAM. Hugh Bish has two staff members who are Cancer survivors and we dedicate our efforts to them this year.

This event is just one of many where we teach students to be compassionate and actively involved in THEIR community. Part of good citizenship.

1st day of school 2009

Today was a super day!

Everyone was excited to be back in school today. Old and new friends enjoyed all the activities of the day. Keep up the great work Knight and let's have a super school year!

Welcome Back!

The first day of classes are Friday, August 21, 2009. There will be a "Welcome Back to School Night" on Thursday, August 20, 2009 when you will meet the staff, bring student supplies to the school, and find out student/teacher assignments. This event will start at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium with a welcome. This evening is planned to be short, the school will close by 7:00 p.m. we all may get a good night's rest and be ready for an exciting day on Friday!

Staff Changes

We have a few staff changes to share:

Mrs. Halterman who taught 1st grade last year retired.
Miss Tate became Mrs. Ghrayyeb over the summer.
Mrs. Jennett took a different type of teaching job at another LPS school.
Mrs. Ross from the cafeteria has started nursing school.

We have the following new staff members at Hugh Bish:

Mrs. Isom and Mrs. Whittington in Kindergarten.
Miss Short (soon to have a name change too) in 1st grade.
Mrs. Smiley joins us in the cafeteria.

Welcome to our new staff members!

Back to School Night!

WOW! What a great turnout! The Back to School Night was a major success as so many proud parents brought their wonderful children to school to meet their teacher for this year and drop off their school supplies. This helps everyone get a super start for an extremely successful school year with a kick off at 9:00 a.m. on Friday. Thank you for attending.

Morning Doors Open
at 8:45 a.m.

FREE BREAKFAST

Please note students may enter the building at 8:45 a.m. each school day morning. The first 9 weeks period this year we have a pilot program offering FREE BREAKFAST to all Hugh Bish students every morning. Students eating breakfast at school may enter the front doors at 8:45 and go directly and only to the cafeteria to eat breakfast. If participation is strong enough we hope to continue this breakfast program all school year. A good breakfast has been proven to help children more effectively learn and retain information learned. Students must be at school between 8:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to eat breakfast. The breakfast line is the line going in the front door on the right at the front of the building.

Students NOT eating breakfast will enter the left front door at 8:55 a.m. to go directly to the common area for the daily morning assembly and will be joined by breakfast eaters as soon as they have finished breakfast.

It is extremely that ALL students be on time and present for school daily. Each educational opportunity is a positive step toward each child's educational foundation and continued growth.

Arrival Time

We have students arriving at school too early. The appropriate arrival time is NOT before 8:45 a.m. Staff are not on duty until that time and often are in meetings. Students arriving before 8:45 a.m. may be subject to being placed in the Extended Day morning program at a cost to the parent. This is for the student's own safety.

Departure Time

Students are released for the day with the final day's bell at 3:45 p.m. LPS sets all school clocks on the bell system within the district from one clock, which may differ from your clock/watch a little. Please wait outside the front doors and away from the doors. We have twelve classrooms that dismiss through the front doors and we need a great deal of room for people to get out, quickly and safely find their afternoon ride or preferably walking companions.

Hugh Bish
is collecting

various items (Box Tops for Education, Campbell soup labels, Tyson Foods points, recycling inkjet ink cartridges, and if you shop at Country Mart be sure to tell the cashier to enter the Hugh Bish number) to help raise money in general for the school. Please watch for details soon as we will have a web page just for ways to help the school in raising money, donating library books, etc. We are also recycling paper, cardboard boxes, etc. Look for what we cannot recycle in the near future.

When sending ink jet cartridges, PLEASE, put them in a zip lock bag so students do not get ink on them or the school supplies.

Save your Box Tops

More information coming soon, but for now, look for the Box Tops for Education coupon on almost anything. We have added a printer friendly version of the graphic below if you want to see on what all the box tops are available. We will have more information soon on a separate web page within this site.

We are also collecting, Campbell Soup labels, Tyson chicken points and recycling ink cartridges. Watch for information on these items soon.

BULLYING AND HARRASSMENT
ARE UGLY AND WRONG!

Mrs. Wells, our school counselor has started the annual class instruction on bullying and harassment. Your child should bring home a small poster to keep to help them remember that bullying and harassment is wrong and should be reported to their teacher so it may be investigated and dealt with. The posters she gave students are on her web page. This is another step we take at Hugh Bish to keep ALL students safe.

Fall School Pictures

Tuesday, September 1 is the date for the fall school photo shoot!

This is a PRE-PAY photo event and money must be included in the photo envelope if students are receiving photos. See the envelope/brochure the students took home last week for more information.

Have you ever seen
a school bus walk?

Get ready! We are ready for our Walking School Bus this year. Weather permitting; the Hugh Bish Walking School Bus will walk to and from school on October 7th and each Wednesday after. Watch the newsletter and web site for more information.

We need parent, grandparent, uncles and aunts, etc. to help in walking with the students. A background check is required. If interested, please contact the school at 248-2244 and leave your name and phone number so we may discuss this with you.

Students desiring to walk with the Walking School Bus MUST have a permission form completed and on file at the school. Those will be coming out very soon to students who live within one-half mile of the school. Please let your teacher know you want to do this. Bicycles may join in too, with permission slips on file and as long as they "walk" their bikes. Pick up and drop off points will go out to those who sign up and complete a permission form.

If you are not walking think about another type of transportation. We must reduce the number of personal vehicles bringing students to school and being picked up daily. We must help the environment! And it would be much safer around the school and the whole neighborhood if Safe Routes to School philosophies were adopted and applied by everyone.

Walking School Bus
IS HERE!

The Hugh Bish Walking School Bus starts October 7, 2009. We will start walking at 8:15 a.m. that morning and will walk to school in time for breakfast or the daily Knight Time Assembly. Look for letters on more information that were sent home on October 1st with a permission form which MUST be returned for a child to participate. We will begin the first walking route in the southeast part of the neighborhood.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Volunteers are needed to help walk dozens of students safely to and from school as this program expands to a daily event. We are starting on Wednesdays and plan to expand it to a daily event, weather permitting. We will NOT walk on days where the weather is extreme, i.e. wind chill below 32 degrees. Please contact the office if you would like to help in a morning or afternoon or even both.

Thank you for your support and interest in the program.

International Walk to School Day
as indicated in the school newsletter, was Wednesday, October 7th. By observation we had more students riding to school that day than any day this year other than the first week. We must encourage more walking. Traffic was totally jammed up three times on that morning where cars had to stop and the streets were blocked. Please seriously consider using, participating and volunteering the Hugh Bish Walking School Bus.

Walking School Bus has its first day!

The Hugh Bish Walking School Bus started with success as we had students walking our south route on our first day AND interest and volunteers for a second route. Look for the second route to begin on October 21st, our next Wednesday in school. See the photos below of our first walk. It was a small group, but a great start we expect to grow. Thank you for the students who participated and parents who volunteered and participated.

Parent-Teacher
Conferences

These are occurring NOW! If you have not scheduled one, please do so ASAP!

Many conferences will be held before and after school hours from Oct. 7-12. The day of October 14th, there is NO SCHOOL for students as the day is set aside to finish conferences. Elementary School student's parents are always exceptionally wonderful about attending meetings. Thank you for our combined support of the students to make them the best in the world!

NO SCHOOL

This is the last of the parent-teacher conferences.

This Thursday and Friday of October 15 and 16 is Fall Break.
Have a safe and enjoyable Fall Break!

Walking School Bus
Part 2

ALMOST

Safe Routes to School

A few details must be worked out yet before the second route will start. We do not have permission slips or neighborhood letters out yet to residents along the route. We must also have staff volunteers to walk with each WSB. This must be done before we can start walking the second route officially. Sorry for the delay, but student safety and following set guidelines are extremely important.

We have the volunteers needed for the second route of the Hugh Bish Walking School Bus. We started with a southeast route as based on school enrollment, that was the area with the most children attending Hugh Bish AND that is where we had the volunteers needed to start the program.

NOW, we have the volunteers needed to safely have a route to the northeast as well. Both routes will be operational on Wednesday, October 28nd, we hope. Please encourage your parents to allow you to walk the route with the adults for safe school arrival and return trip home that day. Permission slips will go home early that week and MUST be returned to school by Tuesday afternoon.

The Walking School Bus program is a great way to help eliminate the traffic hazards we are having around the school. Once we start walking daily, we should have at least 60-80% less traffic, maybe even less. This will be a huge safety improvement.

Thank you for your participation and support of this program.
