A little bit of History...

Howell Vision Statement

At Howell Elementary School, we value the individual worth and dignity of each child. Acknowledging the diverse backgrounds from which our students come, we accept all children where they are intellectually, emotionally, and socially, and help them develop to their fullest potential.

Our vision is to provide an opportunity for the physical, cultural, and intellectual growth of all students in a positive, safe, and healthy environment. We encourage students to develop self-directed, positive attitudes and to acquire processes for lifelong learning. We expect students to show respect for others while also maintaining a healthy respect for themselves.

We believe our children can best be served by strengthening the lines of communication between home, school, and community.

Building establishment:

Howell was opened in 1952.  The school was named after Mr. A.T. Howell, the first superintendent of Lawton Public Schools, who was elected in 1901.  When the school first opened, they had three classrooms in the auditorium and one in the library.  During the early years, they had from 35 to 42 students in each class.

The first principal was Mildred Coltharp (1952-1954) followed by:
Lee Smith (1954-1955)
Orvis Rigsby (1955-1959)
Clarence Shields (1959-1975)
Howard Smith (1975-1996)
Donna Bagwell (1996-1999)
Steve Harwell (1999-2000)
Steve Schraner (2000-2003)
Cindy Nunery (2003-2004),
Brenda Hatch (2004 – present).

In 2002 students from Roosevelt Elementary School merged with Howell following their school’s closing.  In 2003 students from Garlfield Elementary School moved to Howell. Today, there are 197 students in grades Kindergarten through five.  Our class sizes range from 17 – 25.
